Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in stress reactions and stress factors between overseas dispatched soldiers and the mother corps soldiers.

Methods: One hundred and twenty three mother corps soldiers and eighty seven overseas-dispatched soldiers were surveyed using structured questionnaires. The data were analyzed using Cronbach¡¯s alpha, factor analysis, t-test, correlation, and regression in SPSS WIN 12.0.

Results: Grade, age, and level of education had a statistically significant difference between overseas-dispatched soldiers and mother corps soldiers. Mother corps soldiers showed higher scores in personal, interpersonal, organizational, environmental stress factors, and personal reactions than did overseas-dispatched soldiers. The level of personal reaction had a positive correlation with organizational stress factors in overseas-dispatched soldiers, and organizational factors and environmental factors in mother corps soldiers respectively. The levels of organizational stress reaction had a positive correlation with organizational stress factors in overseas-dispatched soldiers, and personal factors and organizational factors in mother corps soldiers.

Conclusion: The findings of this study provided a better understanding of the causes of stress among mother corps soldiers and overseas-dispatched soldiers and their reactions to other stress. Therefore, the commanders of overseas-dispatched and mother corps soldiers can apply this knowledge when commanding and managing their units.
